2017
I haven't done that in a while here, if I ever, but since 2017 was pretty eventful, and in a good way, for once...
The biggest change for me was work-related. After 6 or 7 interviews (I swear at some point I felt like I was applying for a position with MI6 or something!), following my passing the CCNA Routing & Switching in 2016, I had an opportunity to get a job as a network support engineer. At first I wasn't really motivated—I thought it'd go the same way as all my other similar job applications—but it turned out I had a real chance to get it, so I gunned for it, aaaand... There I am now.
It has a very steep learning curve, and to be honest I haven't been able to work on more certifications due to that + university, but I wouldn't go back.
Due to the aforementioned new job, I also got to move to London.
Me. London.
The kind of place where I could never imagine myself to be, even 1 year ago. Moving to London (specifically: having the money for that) was for 'winners', for people with super jobs, and I never saw myself in such a light, or as being able to get anything better than an entry-level job in... anything, really.
Here, too, I wouldn't go back. I loved Edinburgh, and I'm sad that I don't get to see my friends there as often now. But I also love London; I feel at home there (tbh I've felt at home there since 2008, first time I visited, five minutes after setting foot out of the Tube station I was home); I got lucky on the flat I live in (in terms of location, flatmates, and flat quality—my room is huge!); and my work place is good.
For the same reason as above: travelling to the USA for the first time in my life. First for my last job interview in January, then for two weeks of training in April. I wouldn't want to live there, but travelling? Yeah, I'd do that again. California was sunny and pleasant (I had super nice weather when I walked all the way of the Golden Gate Bridge and back).
Back to uni! Open University, actually, for a Computing & IT degree. First 'semester' went well, I'm now into the second one (robotics, networking and Linux), and I like it better than the first (which was more an introduction so I was a little bored, haha). This is going to take time, but having a degree that will be useful in my work, and not my old fancy History and English literature license degrees, well, I hope this can help later, if I want to apply for a manager position.
Writing. I didn't do much until November, I haven't even finished translating Our Darker Purpose (see: OU + demanding new job), but I've been super-inspired since August/September, working on my Eien reboot, and I'm really happy with what I've achieved so far. As any first draft, it's full of stuff I need to rewrite or get rid of, but as storytelling goes, it's real progress, especially compared to the first version of that story, back in 2005-2006!
(Of course, count on me to make my 'villain/antagonist' an overall good guy, and my 'hero' both a coward and a terrorist... I think there's a memo I didn't get somewhere. )
Drawing: plenty of inspiration thanks to Eien, or was it the contrary? Writing and drawing have been fuelling each other here. I hadn't drawn anything since 2016, so I can't say I've made huge progress... but I'm getting reacquainted with my style, *and* I've finally learnt to draw proper fire!
The rest: now I need to exercise more. I've signed up for HEMA classes (historical fencing—rapier, more specifically) but haven't been in a while due to screwing up my ankle. Again. I hope I can go back in January!
WIP
That recent sketch of Aske-in-action needs some inkin' love. Perhaps I'll use screentones again for a change.
